Leann Stutt during her side saddle lesson with Michelle Werrett
Leann Stutt, winner of the Country Sports South West competition accepted her prize of an introductory side saddle lesson with Michelle Werrett at the Quantock School of Riding.
Michelle Werrett is an experienced side saddle instructor, qualified and registered with the Side Saddle Association. She is regularly seen out on Exmoor riding side saddle, having ridden that way exclusively for the past twenty years. Michelle is particularly enthusiastic about the opportunities side saddle can offer to people (either male or female) who, for physical reasons, find difficulty in riding astride.
Riding side saddle is a traditional art with an important place in equestrianism today. It is an elegant and stylish way to ride, yet remains a practical way of crossing the country. Whether you want to show, hunt or simply enjoy riding around tranquil country lanes, it's more fun side saddle.
Leann had never ridden side saddle before but she took to it very quickly. Michelle said, "With Leann's natural poise she quickly developed a straight and elegant seat and looked at home on the side saddle. I very much hope she keeps it up."
The introductory lesson covered important aspects such as side saddle fitting and preparing a horse to carry a side saddle for the first time. Leann is interested in showing so different side saddle classes were explained and judges' expectations were discussed.
Turnout was also covered and Leann tried on a side saddle habit and learned how the skirt is fitted to the rider and how it should hang when riding.
Leann said, "I really enjoyed myself and learned lots." She now hopes to ride side saddle on her own horse.
